SNOW 4 A White Fashion Event 2013

The San Francisco Bay Area Fashion Network (SFBAF) is a fashion trade association with membership consisting of womenswear, menswear, jewelry and accessory designers, stylists, photographers, hair & make-up artists, model agencies, fashion show director/producers, retail buyers, fashion editors, and fashion industry related professionals.

The SFBA Fashion Network objective is to build a business & social network to promote awareness and create a directory website of the fashion industry in the San Francisco Bay Area. Membership includes networking activities and meetings. Events held twice a year include an annual fashion showcase featuring SFBA Fashion Network talent.

Never mind the old-fashioned advice against wearing weight-adding white on camera. At the third annual Snow event, hosted by the San Francisco Bay Area Fashion Network, droves of picture-happy partygoers eagerly posing in head-to-toe white were as much a part of the entertainment as the white-themed fashion show.

Held at the unlikely venue of a SoMa auto-repair garage that was transformed into an industrial-chic catwalk Jan. 28, the evening drew about 250 guests dressed in everything from slinky gowns and feathered spectator hats to cheeky flight suits and fur chubbies.
The 30-minute fashion show, produced by a crew of about 100 volunteers, featured six local designers and a range of aesthetics and skill levels. The lineup included veterans Cari Borja, Julie Schindler and Domingo, as well as emerging designers Violetta Vieux, Cana Klebanoff and Herbert Williamson.
Vieux, a native of Moldova who studied fashion in Paris, opened the presentation with three expertly constructed wedding gowns that converted into frothy cocktail dresses intended for the reception.
Klebanoff, a student at City College of San Francisco who has worked as an intern for Domingo, kept things fresh with his G.I. Joe-meets-1970s-inspired menswear collection. Basic jersey T-shirts and turtlenecks paired well with trim, structured suits in white cotton twill and linen.
Recent Chicago transplant Herbert Williamson showed a somewhat disjointed collection of pencil skirts, voluminous blouses and an overworked evening gown that looked something like a bikini top attached to a ruffled column skirt.
Schindler, who began her career in the late 1980s designing coats at wholesale for stores such as I. Magnin, did what she said she knows best: outerwear. While the concept of her shiny, full-length jacket went awry with its quilted lab coat effect, Schindler also delivered more wearable pieces, such as structured overcoats in creamy white with bold, oversize collars and buttons.
Borja and Domingo were the clear anchors for the night. Borja delighted the crowd with a breezy loungewear collection in organic cotton, linen and tulle that she dubbed "boudoir to the beach."
Her crinkled linen men's pieces, her first foray into menswear, were sent down the makeshift runway in striptease fashion, to the crowd's sheer delight.
Domingo punctuated the event with an impressive seven-piece collection of meticulously constructed eveningwear, styled with piles of statement jewelry by local designer Saeia.
An icy, sequined, long-sleeved backless gown seemed ideal for a wintry opening night at the Ballet, while a flutter-sleeve lace mini-dress epitomized the freshness of spring.
Domingo said, it was a great challenge designing white, because it can be very flat, so you need to know how to creatively add texture, jewels, details, flow and movement and bring white to life.
It was yet another successful event from SFBAF that the people are already talking about and looking forward to next years SNOW 5.

The Largest Fashion Show on the West Coast - FOTS 2013

The 9th annual “Fashion On The Square” charity fund raising runway show was held on August 18, 2013, at the Intercontinental Hotel, 888 Howard Street, San Francisco.

This year, FOTS 2013 celebrated San Francisco native designer Colleen Quen’s 15 years of fashion. FOTS 2013 benefited FOTS+TheArts, a non-profit organization formed in 2012 that grants scholarships to students in the fashion industry who blend fashion and the arts in their work on the runway or in visual representations.

Shortly after the show, in Intercontinental Hotel’s Grand Ballroom, Fashion On the Square 2013 started with FOTS+TheArts opening presentation of young singer Alyssa Alves accompanied by Alonzo King LINES Ballet’s ballerina Caroline Rocher. This was Ms. Rocher’s second, highly-anticipated-return performance at Fashion On The Square after having first graced the runway at FOTS 2009.

Immediately after, FOTS 2013 hostess Valerie Coleman Morris (pictured left) emerged to the runway, wearing the stunning Colleen Quen’s signature dress in red.

Not only the night was to celebrate Colleen Quen and her 15 years in fashion, but it is also to reintroduce Colleen Quen Couture into the public. The night would then feature designers B Michael (his work was first featured by FOTS in 2009), Ricky Lee’s Roc Rio, as well as the work of student designers in a segment called the Fresh Faces of FOTS.

The first runway show of the night belong to New York Couture and Ready-to-Wear designer and CFDA member B Michael, who showed his b michael AMERICA RED for Macy’s collection as well as several of his couture pieces.

Later during the night, he was presented with Guest Designer of the Year honorary award by FOTS Founder and Creative Director Y’Anad Burrell. B Michael is the ‘only’ designer in the United States who has 100% of his collections made in America.

During the short B Michael video presentation before the first model walked down the runway, he explained his collection is about “confident, modern women” who “has an agenda”. Use of color, mix-and-match patterns give way to clean, sophisticated yet not contrived looks.

Indeed, the looks were clean and crisp, beautifully made and fit the models really well. It’s no wonder Mr. Michael has shown his collections worldwide (including Beijing, China, Korea and Shanghai) and has had his designs worn by popular and most influential celebrities like BeyoncĂ©, Halle Berry, Cate Blanchett and Cicely Tyson, among many others.

And it’s so energizing to see the full-house crowd clapped to every single look that came down the runway.
People are already anticipating next year’s show. It was a total blast and really unforgettable one.

South Effingham High School Student Runway Show

South Effingham High School is proud of its young and promising talented and creative designers who are hoping to make it big in the industry someday and they are working their way towards it.

SEHS has been giving these young hopeful an avenue and opening the pedestal for them to reach for their dream and a chance at making it into the competitive world of fashion.

The students have lit up the runway during the annual runway show where it featured 58 original designs and collections of South Effingham High School student designers last February 25, 2013.

The theme of the show was, “Handmade Couture.”

The designs and collections were modeled by student as well, which is very interesting. Garments are created and crafted by budding designers and presented by student models who also would want to make a career in fashion and modeling, it’s like a tow-for-a-show.

There were actually three categories the designers have to compete on; first is called “kitchen couture” where the idea is basically on aprons, and then there is the “cut-up couture” or what they refer to as up cycled – which means using old clothing to make brand new ones and then the third and last category is the “creative couture” where the designers were given the same pattern and the challenge is how to make it look original and not merely a replica of the other’s work.

The garments were judged by local artists, educators and models and the audience as well got the chance to vote and pick their choices for the best model and designer.

There were two stand-outs for the night, Hannah Coburn and Taylor Sanders and although others did not win, they definitely enjoyed the opportunity and it surely gave them that huge step towards reaching their dreams.

All proceeds of the show were donated to benefit the art department and the annual Cathy Leaf Art Scholarship

Wear Your Waste - Philadelphia University Annual Student Fashion Show

The student designers of Philadelphia University created and hosted their annual design X fashion show called, “wear your waste.”

Student designers created a unique and interesting collection inspired by nature, games and music, food and ‘trash.’

They're used materials you would have not thought of using to create clothing, they used mostly trash materials such as; trash bags, shower curtains, and insulation.

For someone who does not have the talent and the creative imagination, you would not be able to come up with the collection they featured, if you haven’t known of the materials, you really would have not guessed it.

They were impressive.

Some of the student designers used donated materials; products bought at Home Depot and recycled plastics and fabrics to create their incredibly fantastic and interesting designs.

They have also made use of used clothing, garbage bags, shoulder pads and videocassette tape.

The show gained a lot of positive responses, it was evident that the crowd was impressed and loved it; you here frequent wows from the audience and a lot of smiles and nods.

Anybody who has the sense of fashion and eye for art would see the talent and creativity invested in each of the collection pieces.

It was an exciting show, gave the designers the opportunity to showcase their talents and a challenge that pushed them to explore the limits of their creativity and embrace cutting-edge design concepts.

Vogue Student Fashion Show

Follow FashionGlitter's board Fashion-Glitter on Pinterest.
The York House School of Fashion in Vancouver Canada held another annual event – Vogue: Student Fashion Show.

Like in every year’s event, this one was a huge success as well, kudos to all the young designers who worked very hard and to the whole management.

The show was quite simple, there is no specific theme and young designers have to come up with collections and designs on different categories.

From sleep wears to casual and everyday wear, to party dresses and formal wears and business outfits.
They maybe are simple but sometimes you get to appreciate designs that are simple in details.

One can see that these designer have really put their passion in to their works, they have spent all year perfecting their designs which will be showcased on this annual event as well as to culminate all their hard works and trainings.

It was a fun show, though it may not be as spectacular as other student fashion shows, but you can how genuinely happy everyone were and the rapport between the student designers and student models.

You can also tell by their work that they have had great training and education over the years and a good environment for experience.

The senior designers from the textile class are promising talents who will no doubt one day make their own mark in the industry.

Step Right Up – CCAD Senior Fashion Show

Fashion Glitter
One of the most spectacular and unforgettable student fashion shows is one from the talented designers on Columbus College of Arts and Design.

Their Step Right Up - Senior Fashion Show way back was one of the most festive, fun and jam-packed shows they have had.

At the entrance, the whole show looks like a circus, clowns and jugglers greeted the people coming and the audience, and there were bright lights and colors everywhere. The mood of the whole show is a total FUN.
Why of why? But of course it is because; the whole concept of that show was “Circus Couture.”

There were 26 student designers who showcased their designs and collections. It was interesting to see how each designer conceptualizes his/her design.

Some designers interpreted the theme quite literally, like you will see layers of hats on a model that is fitted for a ring master, some animal prints and tent skirts.

Others on the other hand where abstract in their approach and only used circus colors like red, green and yellow and then stripes and circles or bows and all that circus details.

The later designs were more wearable than other designers who have interpreted the theme on their designs literally.

But, the whole show really fun and everyone who had a blast. It was packed with dozens of people from the industry, who never failed to come and see some new and unique designs and discover promising talents.

It was a job very well done from CCAD’s senior student designers. Big things are expected of them, for sure.
