Stand-out Looks from SCAD Fashion Show 2014

Savannah College of Art and Design's Annual Fashion Show took place last 17th  of May 2014 and for the first time at the SCAD Museum of Art, which opened in 2011 and was a perfect backdrop for SCAD students' hard work.

Stephen Burrows received the "Andre Leon Talley Life Time Achievement Award." Although
he have been the honoree at SCAD Fashion Show, the graduating students were the true focus of the event as they showed off their final collections to friends and family and the influential people in the world of fashion, not to mention the fashionistas from across the globe.

What made the show truly remarkable are diversity of collections and designs. From rugged to glamour, chic and fancy to edgy and funky. They catered for all kinds of fashion choices and really clicked with the audience. For instance, Hannah Amundson, one of the most talented designers, made an all-gold collection centered around words and used it to describe her generation and social media obsession. On the other hand, another talented designer Amber Nifong burned out rayon to turn it into a couture fabric, while Wesley Berryman created unisex line including a pair of pants which were sheer from the knee down and an interesting pink coat.

Most of the designs were actually quite simple in detail, but you can tell that they were very well thought-out from the details to use of fabric and colors. They all kind of like complement each and makes a uniquely wonderful ensemble.

SCAD once again made a statement, that when it comes to fashion event - their's is not one to miss.

Fashioning a Bright Future

United Arab Emirates is economy is not all that is booming these days but as well as opening wider opportunities for fashion, arts and designing. There are a lot of promising designers who with the new generation of UAE have dared to come out and enter the crazy yet exciting world of fashion, bring a twist in the countries culturally inspired fashion.

Designers like Khawla bin Khedia who started with making homemade clothes suddenly found her path into professional designing. She now runs a Dubai-based fashion label with her sister, then later ventured further to UAE countries and Qatar, another booming country.

Another successful in the field is Fatma al-Mosa who is an entrepreneur and hers is designing "abayas" that are fashionable and comfortable for the now modern and working women of the country.

With the courage and passion for art and fashion of designers like Khawla and Fatma, many female entrepreneurs and who have the passion and drive to venture into arts, fashion and designing suddenly gained their courage as well. Today, more and more of them are realizing their goals, studying and giving their dreams the best shot.

UAE's designers have inspired not only neighboring countries but are making impact and dramatic entrance to some of the world fashion capitals. Celebrities now wore designs that are inspired by the unique cultures these countries, designs that evokes that of a royal and regal look. For UAE designers, its about elegance.They pay a lot of attention to details, each piece must not be a replica of the other.

What is so captivating about their designs is that although they have put modern twist to it, no matter where the design is worn, it always speaks highly of their rich culture.

Highlights from the 2014 AAU Graduation Fashion Show

When it comes to fashion and design, Academy of Art University is unbeatable. Each year, they give birth to new and amazing designs that brings fashion in a frenzy and giving some new and interesting edge and going to a whole new level.

Every show they put up, they have lots of surprises. AAU fashion events are one of the most anticipated events of the year, and the only show that manages to bring together fashionistas across world. It creates moments that shakes the fashion world with a wide array of excitements.

AAU is really, indeed shaping the FUTURE of the Fashion Industry.

Spilt Milk's Designs and Collection - Mercedes-Benz Fashion Show

Highlights from Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week 2013

The name comes from the saying “dont cry over spilt milk” and symbolizes a positive outlook in life. Spilt Milk designs and manufactures everything in Cape Town using only local labour. Thus when you wear Spilt Milk clothing, you portray a confident woman who is classic,positive, playful at heart  and lives life to the fullest, whilst investing in the future of South Africa.

Spilt Milk specialise mainly in dresses,but also have a selection of tops,skirts,coats and trousers, which are available at boutiques across South Africa Namibia and Holland.

Spilt Milk has been showcased at various prestigious events including the 'Smirnhoff Rare Fashion Finds' show (2004), the 'Nederberg Fashion show (2006) and was also featured on Top Billing for the 'Momentum Lifestyles Awards', In 2011 - 2014 Spilt Milk exhibited at the Design Indaba expo in Cape Town as well as at the AFI showroom (part of the MBFWCT)in 2012, the Source Africa expo in 2013. Spilt milk showcased their summer 2013 collection in Cape Town at MBFWCT as well as a summer 2014 collection in Mozambique at MBFW.

Genieve Prescod's Passion for Fashion

She was among the 11 students who graduated from the University of T&T’s Caribbean Academy of Fashion Design on June 22. Genieve Prescod is a young woman with a passion for fashion.

Over the past four years, Prescod and the other students pursued studies in the Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree. At the graduation, each student was required to present a mini collection in which they unveiled six concepts before the large audience. The event was aptly titled Beyond Limits. Prescod’s collection was Tenebras Circum. She later spoke to Sunday Vibe and shared her passion, vision and mission for the local fashion industry.

Q: What or who made you study design?
A: I’ve always had an interest in artistic and creative fields of study. Of all the various creative fields, fashion design was the most appealing to me.

How would you describe your designs?
My designs are edgy and unique with a sophisticated touch, and attention to detail.

Where do you find your inspiration?
I find inspiration in everything, but I am mainly inspired by the Victorian-era fashion and Japanese street fashion, such as the “visual kei” and “lolita” styles.

Do you have a style/fashion icon?
Although I do not really look to any particular person as a style/fashion icon that I would emulate or draw inspiration from, I do admire the personal style of Amy Lee of Evanescence.

Are there designers that influence your style?
Seth Aaron Henderson and Alexander.

What is your approach to a collection?
Inspiration! Research! Brainstorm! When I am inspired by something, I research it thoroughly, collecting information and reference pictures. Then, using what I have learned, I envision a fashion story based on that inspiration and brainstorm various designs until I come up with the design elements I think suit the story best. Once I have found the elements I like best for that story, I then work towards designing a cohesive collection based on those elements to portray the story of my inspiration.

What are your favourite colours, colour combinations and textiles?
I always get teased about patriotism for this, but my absolute favourite colour combination is red, black and white. My favourite individual colours would be black, red, pink and purple. As for fabrics, I have an intense love for leather or anything resembling leather. I also fall easily in love with anything that has a houndstooth print, pattern or texture.

How do you define your personal sense of style?
My personal sense of style is somewhat gothic, but also fun and flirty. My style reflects the various sides of my personality, and I often dress to reflect my mood.

Dunedin's Simore Montgomery "Steampunk Award" Design

Among the glitz and glamour and the scores of black-clad audience members, a trio of steampunk punters turned heads at the Hokonui Fashion Design Awards.

When Port Chalmers woman Simone Montgomery took to the stage of the 26th awards to claim the steampunk category award, sighs of recognition rang throughout the the room.

Montgomery was decked out in full steampunk - Victorian-era-science fiction attire.

With a clear passion for the style, it comes as no wonder it transferred into her elaborate design which went on to be crowned The Southland Times overall Award of Excellence.

The steampunk creation was as complex as it was polished and had an added dimension of an opening booty chest - handy for putting things in while you're time-travelling, Montgomery said.

A long-time fan of costume and design, Montgomery had been involved in the Nelson Wearable Arts for many years and participated in Oamaru's thriving steampunk subculture.

She spent about a month pulling the garment together from a collection of odds and ends picked up at various op shops around the region.

Most of the elements of her garment were recycled, something that was very important to her, she said. Read more...

NYC Full Figured Fashion Week

The fashion world is about to be thrown a curve ball.

For three days starting on June 16, the catwalks will be filled with models showing off the styles from the premier designers from all over the world who specialize in flattering the figures of women over a size 12.

The third annual Full Figured Fashion Week is all about the sizes that are largely ignored by the mainstream fashion world and snubbed during the hoopla of Mercedes Benz Fashion Week.

The interest this year has been overwhelming. Events have sold out, and women are clamoring for tickets to the shows. Gwen Devoe, the organizer of Full Figured Fashion Week, expects over 1,000 people to attend the grand finale showcase.

"It's been crazy," said Devoe. "It's just exploding. Women are finally getting a chance to see fashion come alive on models with bodies they can relate to."

The event is answering the call from all the plus-size women who want one thing: The same choices in the marketplace that their skinnier sisters get.  They want variety and good quality at a fair price.

"Plus-size women in America want fashionable, well-made clothes," said Devoe. "We have money to spend. and we're happy to give it to the designers and stores who help us celebrate our curves."

There are events for buyers, bloggers, models and sponsors as well as sample sales, trunk shows and a shopping crawl for out-of-town fashionistas who want to see what New York City has to offer fuller-figured shoppers. Read more...

Sexy swimwear, high-end eveningwear, shoes and cocktail dresses will be on display for women who want a little individuality in their wardrobe and not just to shop at the big department stores.

"A lot of clothing for plus-sized women is just really ugly," said Rachel Kacenjar, the Cleveland-based designer of Sweetooth Couture.  "There's a lot of business-casual apparel but really not very much for women who want something different or unusual."

Kacenjar designs for larger-size women with a taste for retro glamour.  With an accent on comfortable and flattering fabrics, she creates sexy dresses, skirts and tops that go from the office to the dance floor.
